Preoperative assessment is usually seen as a medical consult whose primary objective is to estimate a surgical risk based on predictive models. However, the global implication of this analysis is not always considered. The objective of this revision is to describe the scopes of preoperative assessment as an integral evaluation of the surgical patient, ranging from patient perioperative risk stratification to implementation of maneuvers that reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and mortality.
