Abstract

The political strategies deployed by the French government to manage the covid-19 crisis are controversial. The situational points it made to inform the population about this crisis and to orient its behaviors contributed to produce emotions whose effects need to be better identified. Using a questionnaire survey (N = 221), we propose in this article to explore the empirical manifestations of these emotions to better understand how they are associated with the adoption of responsible health behaviors. In accordance with the results of the scientific literature, we will see that fear and hope, as generated by Jean Castex's speech of November 12, 2020, are two emotions that are positively correlated with the adoption of these behaviors. However, we will show that such a conclusion must be discussed insofar as the in-depth study of the effects of this communication reveals ambivalent results. We will argue that Jean Castex's speech also reinforces the emotion of anger that respondents feel towards the covid-19 crisis in a way that, by affecting their information-seeking activities on the Internet and their understanding of this crisis, does not encourage the adoption of responsible health behaviors.
