Abstract

The article discusses the flame-based defensive weapons used by Britain from it shoreline to deter a German invasion. Topics include Britain had used fire in battles in dates back centuries; In 1914 Secretary of the War Council, Lord Maurice Hankey, conceived of a weapon that could be deployed to set fire to the sea itself; and at the Petroleum Warfare Department workshops Sir Donald Banks, a British military officer, was organized the production of fougasse bombs and flame barrage systems.
