Today, the Romani population is one of the largest and oldest minority communities in most European countries. In Croatian territories, their history was often marked by anti-Gypsy policies of persecution and repressive assimilation. Scientific research into the history of the Romani within European historiographies had been very modest and has only begun to develop continuously in the second half of the 20th century.
