Abstract

The text is a review of the book "Hans Urs von Balthasar, vol. I: Structural Axes of his Theology" written by Rodrigo Polanco. The author highlights the importance and complexity of the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar, a Swiss theologian of the 20th century. Polanco aims to fill the existing gap in the accessible and comprehensive synthesis of Balthasar's work, which consists of 16 volumes and spans approximately 7,000 pages. The first volume of Polanco's book focuses on the introductory aspects and structural axes of Balthasar's theology, while the second volume is dedicated to the critical study of the central theological lines of the Trilogy and their contribution to various areas of theological science. The author does not offer a critical assessment of Balthasar's theology in this volume, leaving that task for the second volume. Volume II of Polanco's work is dedicated to examining the contribution of Balthasar's theology to the elements of Catholic dogmatics. The nine chapters of the book are organized around themes such as fundamental theology, the mystery of God, Christology, Christian anthropology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. The Trinity and Christology are key elements throughout the work. Polanco presents Balthasar's personal vision on theological topics and seeks to understand his project without ceasing to value and criticize it. Although the work has some repetitions and may be difficult to evaluate, it is a valuable contribution to approaching Balthasar's theology. [Extracted from the article]
