The article highlights campaign of preservation advocates to gain landmark protection for the last historic Colored School No. 4 in Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City. A background on the history of the 1853 building including the assault during the 1863 Draft Riots and hosting of multiple primary schools for white children is provided. It discusses the eligibility and potential of the building to gain landmark status and looks back at its legacy as a civil rights defender for African Americans.
