Abstract

Defining in a single category the complex reality of the peoples who have always inhabited the American continent has been a multifaceted problem. The misunderstanding of the West, the lack of creativity when using words, the inconvenience and contradiction of some concepts and the construction of a history from a Eurocentric paradigm, have been some of the factors that have made the matter more complex. Of all of them, the category “Indian” seems to be the most appropriate, as long as it goes through a process of reconstruction and dignity. This paper tries to make a journey through this category from the cultural realities of the continent to propose a new reading of the Indian as the property of these ancestral and living peoples of our continent.
