Abstract

Anxiety disorder (AD) comorbidity in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common, with a prevalence ranging from 25 % of youth in the general population to 40 % of youth in the clinical population. Cognitivebehavioral therapy (CBT) is the recommended first line psychotherapy for children with anxiety disorders. However, the presence of comorbid ADHD may affect the response to CBT for anxiety. This systematic review aims to assess whether and how the presence of comorbid ADHD affects the efficacy of CBT for AD in children aged 4 to 18 years. A systematic review of the literature was conducted according to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA; Moher et al., 2009). The narrative review of the selected studies indicates a significant reduction of anxiety symptoms in children with comorbid AD and ADHD that appears similar to the one observed in children without comorbid ADHD. Parental participation and ADHD-specific adaptations to CBT may explain these results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
