Abstract

The following work presents, defines and compares different materials used in civil construction over the years, highlighting for this approach adobe, clay, reinforced and prestressed concrete. It is known that each material has very peculiar characteristics and properties and this is what defines the best applicability best suited to meet a specific request. However, over the years, the demand for materials of greater strength, durability, workability, thermal comfort and a concern for aesthetics gradually emerged, which influenced changes in materials and construction techniques. For a better understanding of the topic, a literature review of the contents proposed in articles and books was carried out, comparing the nature and main properties of each contextualized material to its respective temporal reality and cultural predominance. Regarding each material, the following items were addressed: such as resistance, thermal behavior, practice and use in civil construction, also highlighting the improvement of materials and methods developed for each type of application, as engineering and technology have evolved and continue to evolve.
