The article reports that Winning Winches Inc. has succeeded in designing a primary yacht winch that fills the bill for strength and weighs less than 40 lbs (20 kg). The heavy-duty winch, under consideration by Italian and U.S. America's Cup contenders, has added benefits because of inter-changeability of parts and several gear ratios. Each of the main assemblies--the drum, gearbox, and top hat, can be developed and modified without affecting the other parts. The modular design also incorporates composite materials to further weight reduction.
