Abstract
- The treatment of subtrochanteric fractures has evolved over a period of time, from conservative methods, followed by extramedullary fixation, and now to intramedullary fixation. The management of these fractures poses a significant challenge due to strong biomechanical deforming forces. The aim of the study was to assess union rates and functional status after Proximal Femoral Nail (PFN) in subtrochanteric fractures. Materials & Methods A prospective study on adult patients with a follow up of 1 year was conducted at our Orthopedic department between December 2017 and December 2018. 25 patients above the age of 18 years with subtrochanteric fractures were included in the study. Results Patients were assessed clinically and radiologically at 12, 18 and 24 weeks for the fracture union. At final follow up, functional evaluation of the patient was done using Harris Hip Score. Mean time to union was about 16 weeks and the mean Harris Hip Score was 86.1 in our study. Proximal femoral nail is an efficient implant for the treatment of subtrochanteric fractures with high rate of bony union. Conclusion PFN is ideal to treat subtrochantric fractures if biological fixation principles are followed and if normal anatomy is restored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
