Abstract

Complex and changeable environments and conditions in which libraries operate, employee competencies are only one factor in ensuring quality work with users. Ensuring better quality work with users has been one of the main goals of establishing systematic education and training of employees in the Ljubljana City Library (MKL) and initial planning and designing the activities of the MKL Learning Center. Identification of competencies needed for work and the need for their improvement is a fundamental component of the preparation of further education and training programs for library staff. The analysis includes data from two internal surveys to determine the needs for education of MKL employees, conducted in 2011 and 2018, and conducted in the form of an online survey of employees using the 1KA tool. In 2018, employees expressed a greater need for knowledge to work with people, how to communicate effectively with users and colleagues, how to prevent conflicts before they break out, while in 2011 the need for computer and information skills, and communication technologies prevailed. The paper points out the need for continuous and comprehensive monitoring of the needs for further education of library staff at the level of individual libraries as well as at the national level.
