Abstract

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE THIRD DECADE OF THE 19TH CENTURY, THE SUBLIME PORTE DECIDED, MORE BECAUSE OF DISTRUST TOWARD GREEK ADMINISTRATORS OF THE PRINCIPALITIES THAN BECAUSE OF THE EFFORTS AND MEMORANDA OF THE NOBLES OF MOLDAVIA AND WALLACHIA, TO ABANDON THE PHANARIOT RULERS AND REINTRODUCE THE LANDED DOMINIONS. THE WEAKENING OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE'S POLITICAL INFLUENCE ON THE TWO ROMANIAN PRINCIPALITIES WAS TO HAVE A DECISIVE INFLUENCE ON THE PATH THAT MOLDOVA AND WALLACHIA WOULD FOLLOW, AT FIRST SEPARATELY, AND FROM 1859 TOGETHER, IN THE ALMOST ONE HUNDRED YEARS THAT SEPARATED THIS MOMENT FROM THE OUTBREAK OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
