Abstract

Introduction: Intestinal parasites continue to be a public health problem, affecting underdeveloped countries such as Mexico, as they are amongf the 20 main causes of disease. They produce a significant loss of millions of years of potential life, affecting people of all ages and genders, particularly children. Objective: To obtain a general overview of intestinal protozoa in Mexico over a period of 20 years to reinforce actions aimed at reducing their incidence and prevalence. Methods: From a bibliographical search in PUBMED; ScienceDirect; SpringerLink; Scielo; Google Scholar, and ClinicalKey, a retrospective analysis of intestinal protozoa in Mexico, from 2000 to 2020 was carried out, obtaining information on epidemiological content and clinical reports to perform a comparative analysis. The Mexican Republic was divided into eigh geographical zones. Results and conclusions: An epidemiological behavior and approach influenced by several characteristics of each area were evidenced, in addition to this, affirming that intestinal protozoan infections such as Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica and Blastocystis hominis stubbornly persist. However, due to limited information, data from some areas have been impossible to interpret. Likewise, for the control of parasites, it is necessary to intensify research, disseminate information, and apply preventive measures and the correct diagnosis within the Mexican population.
