With a rapid technological development of mechanical circulatory support (MCS), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been applied for such emergencies as cardiogenic shock, hypoxemia, respiratory failure and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In recent years, its application during perioperative period of pediatric congenital heart disease (CHD) has attracted widespread attention, along with some limitations and complications. This review summarized the application progress of ECMO technology during perioperative period and discussed its indications, contraindications, complications and coping strategies in CHD children.
