Abstract

The study further examines Abi T. Ngunga's thesis that the LXX interprets »the name« as a messianic title in Isa 42:4. To test the thesis, the study analyzes other passages wherein »the name« acts with agency in the world (Isa 26:8; 29:23; 30:27; 41:25; 43:7). In each of these, it is shown that messianic interpretation is likely in view of various translational and editorial decisions. In three of these verses (Isa 41:25, 42:4, and 43:7), moreover, the title is ascribed to the servant of Yahweh. Thus, the LXX provides early attestation for the messianic interpretation of the figure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
