Abstract

The article informs long-building frictions among some Iraqi Shiite factions have erupted into deadly fighting on the streets of Baghdad, leaving 24 dead. The violence began after Muqtada al-Sadr declared in a tweet that he was quitting Iraqi politics; his followers stormed the Green Zone, the heavily guarded district that is home to Iraqi government offices, the United Nations and diplomatic missions including the U.S. embassy and ransacked government buildings.
