Abstract

This essay aims to contribute to the discussion on the presence of a Political Theology in Populism. Starting from this presupposition, links are drawn between authors who have studied the processes of Modernity, the problem of Rationalism, the crisis of Liberalism, the rise of totalitarianism, as well as the question of convictions, Political Theology and Populism. The aim is not to provide a definitive interpretation about a problematic that arouses reactions and interpretations as diverse as they are contradictory. The rather modest aim of this paper is to look at the ways in which rationalism has attempted to undermine its "other side", also profoundly modern, and at the impact of this undermining on politics and theory, where Populism is effectively presented as a manifestation of this process and, consequently, as a Political Theology, generally with practical and immediate aims. It is thus considered that the study of the articulations between Populism and Political Theology could serve the rationalist tradition not to neglect the dramatic and highly conflictive origin of the political, which populism uses to intervene in public life.
