Abstract
- Objective: To explore the characteristics of neurological soft signs and the relationship between neurological soft signs and cognitive deficits in patients with chronic deficit schizophrenia. Methods: Totally 62 long-term hospitalized patients with chronic schizophrenia who met the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-Ⅳ) were selected. They were divided into deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia groups according to the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome (SDS) . All the patients were assessed with the Cambridge Nervous Inventory (CNI) for neurological soft signs (NSS),Matrix Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) for cognitive function, and Simpson-Angus Extra Pyramidal System Scale (SAS) and Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) for extra pyramidal response. Results: The deficit patients had higher NSS total scores (P <0. 05) and sensory integration scale scores (P <0. 05) than non-deficit patients. There was a negative correlation between CNI total scores and MCCB total scores in patients with chronic schizophrenia (r=-0. 63,P <0. 001) . Conclusion: It suggests that the patients with deficit schizophrenia have more neurological soft signs than those with non-deficit schizophrenia, mainly in sensory integration disorder. In patients with chronic schizophrenia, the more severe the neurological soft signs, the more significant the cognitive impairment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
