Avances y perspectivas en films bucales aplicados en odontología.

Buccal films are pharmaceutical forms developed from polymers of natural, semi-synthetic or synthetic origin, which are arranged in the form of thin films capable of adhering to the buccal, sublingual or lingual mucosa, allowing the administration of drugs with local or systemic effect. The aim of this study is to compile, characterize and analyze relevant and updated information on buccal films and their therapeutic applications in the dental field. A bibliographic review was carried out to deepen knowledge about the applicability of these formulations in oral pathologies. Buccal films are innovative pharmaceutical forms that are in the research phase, they improve the conditions of drug administration, since they avoid the hepatic first-pass effect, enzymatic inactivation, as well as the handling and comfort in their use. These formulations have proven to have good properties in the treatment of different pathologies at stomatological level, such as periodontal disease, herpetic and fungal infections, as well as in pain management and administration of local anesthesia.
