Abstract
- The article discusses the new edition of the book "Art" by Clive Bell, which was published in 1913. The new edition by Stefan Majetschak in 2019 corrects translation errors and linguistic outdatedness and includes an extensive apparatus of footnotes. In his book, Bell develops a theory of visual art and defines the concept of "significant form" as a crucial characteristic of artworks. The text addresses the significance of the artist, the distinction between purpose and pure form in art, the connection between art and religion, as well as the relationship between art and history. Bell emphasizes the importance of form and design in art and expresses the desire for more popular, meaningless art as long as it is meaningful to the individual. [Extracted from the article]
