Abstract

The use of orthotic-prosthetic devices is the gold standard for the treatment of limb diseases and traumas, especially in the postoperative or rehabilitation phases. In non-permissive scenarios, such as today's operating theatres, the production of these devices using traditional methods represents a major challenge. The introduction of 3D printing technology, coupled with positions as orthopaedic technician within the Armed Forces organisation could be an effective and efficient solution to guarantee an adequate quality of care, even in remote areas. Both for deployed military personnel and the local population would benefit from it. In addition, the wide choice of printing systems and materials would better meet the local needs. Potential advantages include high precision and compliance with the most complex geometries, a lighter logistics chain, and close contact with the patient during the educational, rehabilitation, and adaptive phases. Longer production times and the cost of 3D printing equipment, on the other hand, could be the main obstacles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
