Abstract

The social structure of coastal communities is generally built on Patron (financier)-client (labor) relations. In coastal communities inhabiting the South Sulawesi region. The client patron pattern is known by the local term "mustard-courtier". This designation is deeply rooted in the culture of the people of South Sulawesi who are known as sailors. However, punggawa-Sawi social layering is not found in coastal communities in Cikoang Village, Takalar Regency. The purpose of this study was to see social layering in coastal communities in Cikoang Village, Takalar Regency. This research uses qualitative methods through a case study approach with the aim of comparatively analyzing the social layering of coastal communities in Cikoang Village. The results of this study show that the main work sectors of coastal communities in Cikoang Village are seafarers and farmers. People who work as fishermen are known as independent fishermen. The fishing profession is only used as a side job for coastal communities in Cikoang Village. Their main livelihoods are farmers such as paddy farmers, corn, beans and salt farmers. Related to the social layering of coastal communities in Cikoang Village is not seen from the relationship between Punggawa and Sawi based on economic ties, but in lineage. People of Sayyid descent occupy the highest social class, consisting of Sayyid Opu (Karaeng Opua), Sayyid Karaeng, Sayyid Massang and ordinary Sayyid based on their social layering system. The second level of social status comes from the Karaeng circle, and the third level is Jawi or ordinary people who are in the lowest position in the social layering system of coastal communities in Cikoang Village.
