Abstract

Latest generation of Al-Li alloys are considered as a futuristic material for aerospace industries. Friction stir welding process has been emerged as a suitable joining process for these materials. In this paper, a heat-assisted backing plate is proposed for preheating the workpiece to enhance the quality of weld joint in friction stir welding. A heating element is employed just beneath of the welded line to preheating the material. It was found that the tensile strength has increased after the application of preheat in friction stir welding. It was also observed that the tool wear rate reduces by preheating and thus life of tool enhanced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
