Abstract

The article discusses the role of horses and mules in the U.S. Army during the end of World War I in 1918 when the Army began setting up its remount program to ensure an enormous stock of hooved animals would be available whenever needed. As World War II wore on, the need for horses and mules lessened due to the Army's mechanization. In 1949, the horse breeding program's equipment and stock were sold at a public auction.
