50 years have passed since the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, also known as the Stockholm Conference, which took place in this city between June 5th and 16th, 1972. This conference was the first major event organized to address environmental issues and their incorporation into the international political agenda. As a result of this conference, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was created and principles on the environment and development were agreed upon. To commemorate these 50 years, the Stockholm+50 event was held, where the state of the human environment was discussed and ideas were generated on how to move forward amidst the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.
