Abstract

Introduction: The musculoskeletal disorders have a high incidence and prevalence in the working population internationally. The prevalence in women is 67.17 % and in men is 32.82%. The 12% of consultations in the emergency department (SU) are for ankle sprains, where the majority are people of 35-year-olds, which are usually caused by sports accidents (25%). General objective: To quantify hospital discharges due to trauma to the ankle and foot, during the period between 2017 and 2020 in Chile, according to type of trauma and age group. Materials and methods: Ecological descriptive study. Data on hospital discharges due to ankle and foot trauma between 2017 and 2020 in Chile obtained from the Department of Statistics and Health Information (DEIS) were studied. Because of the nature of the data, it did not require an ethics committee. Results: Of the total hospitalizations during the period, 61.8% corresponded to foot fracture, except ankle, being the most frequent cause, the age group most affected regardless of the cause was 20 to 44 years old (47.8%), followed by the group formed by 45 to 64 years old (30.53%). Conclusions: Ankle and foot trauma mainly affects the population of working age, thus forming a medical and economic problem. Despite this and the frequency, there is not enough research and updating on the subject in Chile, nor is this pathology part of the explicit health guarantees (GES). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
