Abstract
- This article analyzes two phenomena closely linked to racism: segregation and discrimination against migrants of Mexican origin. Based on the analysis of fifteen interviews with male and female immigrants, the article relates how racialization of settlement patterns is expressed at work and in daily life in different California cities. Starting from socio-spatial segregation and discrimination against this population, the author highlights the profound links with the concept of race as a primary category of inequality. Migratory status is often mentioned to justify inequality when talking about immigrants, but this disguises the effect of relationships and racial hierarchies, which have defined and maintained the groups' position. The results show how people live in contexts where segregation and forms of discrimination exist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
