Abstract

This paper analyzed the spatial-temporal variations of vegetation cover at different altitudes and vegetation types over the Qinghai Province and built a long time series NDVI dataset from 1982 to 2018 by using the data of GIMMS NDVI and MODIS NDVI with different spatial-temporal scales. The results show that the overall vegetation cover in the study area has been increased, with the improvement of medium-high altitude and grassland type observed as significant. The vegetation cover in the northwestern and central-eastern area has been increased, while that of the southern region and the Qaidam basin have been decreased from 1982 to 2018, and the temporal and spatial changes of the study area obtained at different scales have good consistency. The increase of vegetation cover in the study area from 1982 to 2018 is significantly correlated with the increase of temperature and rainfall. In addition, vegetation change is significantly correlated with wind speed and sunshine duration in grassland areas above 3000 m. Policies of returning farmland to forest (grass) and returning grazing to grassland have effectively driven the change of vegetation cover in the study area [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
