Abstract

In this article, I analyze the concept of divine man (θεῖος ἀνήρ) in the Lives of philosophers and sophists by Eunapius of Sardis. The book is a collective biography of hagiographic overtones in which the author reflected his notion of personal holiness. I study the way he achieved that by dealing with the figure of the learned sage as a philosopher, rhetor, and iatrosophist, whose charismatic authority revealed to a community of disciples within the framework of the Greco-Roman higher education. In short, Eunapius' divine man is the personification of the extraordinary level of preparation to which the still vigorous Hellenic παιδεία could lead in Late Antiquity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
