Abstract

The article "Editorial: Graphic Storytelling" discusses the connection between image and text in various art forms, particularly in the field of comics. It points out that comic research takes place in various disciplines, but is not yet sufficiently represented in art education and German didactics. The article outlines the development of the engagement with comics in art education and emphasizes the importance of a systematic didactic intertwining of art education and German didactics. It also shows that comics have received little attention in German lessons, despite an interest on the part of students. The text deals with the significance and use of graphic storytelling in language and literary learning, as well as in art and German lessons. It emphasizes that graphic literature promotes emotional intelligence and uses specific sign resources to evoke emotions. It also points out that the production of comics plays an important role and that comics and graphic novels require different symbolic performances. The text suggests promoting interdisciplinary dialogue between art and German and provides examples of the use of graphic storytelling at different age levels. It also points out that the combination of image and text in graphic storytelling can be negotiated in peer conversations. The text deals with character design in comics and how it influences the semantics and narratology of a story. The authors Jeanette Hoffmann and Carolin Wittig use character design as a visually based play value on a didactic-methodological level. The text also includes reviews from the areas of comic production, comic analysis, and comic mediation, as well as an interview with the artist Lisa Morfeld. The interview sheds artistic light on the theoretical connections once again. [Extracted from the article]
