- Reports that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon entered into a deal on December 17, 2004, with the opposition Labor Party to join his Likud government. Significance of the deal for Sharon's plan to dismantle all Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip and four others in the West Bank; Vow by Labor and other leftist parties to support Sharon as long as he remained committed to pulling settlers out of Gaza; Number of cabinet portfolios that Labor is set to get under the agreement.
