Abstract

The article discusses the accelerator hypothesis, which postulated that diabetes is, in fact, a single disease, rather than two distinct entities. The hypothesis argued that the two types of diabetes are distinguished only by the rate of beta-cell loss, and the specific accelerator(s)' responsible. It postulated that there are three accelerators. The first accelerator is the intrinsic potential for a high rate of beta-cell apoptosis, a necessary but insufficient step in the development of diabetes. In other words, the absence of this potential protects against the development of diabetes and vice versa.
