Abstract
- "Blind Spot--Staring Down the Void" is a French-English dialogue between Carole Nadeau and Karen Kipphoff in which they reflect on their collaboration to create a performance with four other unknown-to-each-other artists of different artistic disciplines and cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The performance was developed through workshops and presented at the Norwegian Theatre Academy, Østfold University College, in Fredrikstad, and at the 2017 Meteor Festival in Bergen, Norway. The dialogue addresses the process, outcome, and complications of the production with a focus on encounters with cultural and physical blind spots; the creation of material for a performance in a non-hierarchical, non-directed process; decision-making in a devised process; creative languages; use of devices; new materialism; drawing as performative gestures; and documentation. The performance was the first part of three--the other two being an exhibition and a publication--of the artistic research project Blind Spot: Staring Down the Void undertaken between 2016 and 2020.
