- Reports the cloning of a gene which codes for a mammalian protein with the ability to catalyse demethylation by directly removing methyl groups from 5-methyl-cytosine residues in DNA. Importance of DNA-methylation patterns for regulating genome functions; How a complementary DNA encoldes a methyl-CpG-binding domain; Identification of a DNA-demethylase candidate; Demethylation activity of the translated candidate cDNA.
