Abstract

The present work focuses on the synthesis of ternary glasses having composition 65V2O5.(35-x)ZnO. xTeO2 (where x=5, 10, 15, 20, 25) using conventional rapid melt quenching method.X-ray diffraction ascertains the amorphous nature of glass samples. The Archimedes method has adopted to determine the density of glass samples at room temperature. The theoretical refractive index and bandgap energies of the glasses havebeen calculated by applying the Lorentz –Lorenz equation. The theoretical optical basicity and oxide ion polarizability have measured by applyingthe polarizability approach. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility and the nonlinear refractive index havebeen determined by using generalized Miller's rule. The results indicate that with increasing the content of TeO2, there isa decrease in refractive index from 2.64 to 2.54, third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ(3))from 5.09×10-12esuto 3.48×10-12 esuand increase in the optical bandgap from 2.24 eV to 2.53 eV. The higher value of optical basicity in the range of 1.04-1.03, whereas polarizability of oxide ionsin the range from 2.66 Å3 to 2.62Å3givesa significant contribution to the linear and nonlinear optical properties of these glasses.
