The article features U.S. Vice President Al Gore and the publication of his book "Earth in the Balance," in 1999. The book consists of references to chaos theory, relativity theory, and self-organized criticality theory. Maps, charts, and graphs are also featured in the book, along with almost 20 pages of notes and bibliographic material. It could be said that the book has a scholarly veneer, however, it is also quite personal. "Time" columnist Lance Morrow wrote in one of his articles that the book speaks with a certain passionate authenticity. The spiritual journey of Gore at mid-life and his personal philosophy are mentioned in the book.
