Abstract

The question of maternity has been a main issue in feminist debates. The aim of this paper is to show how lesbian maternities put into question the concept of mother and maternity. Based on an autoethnography, we want to show (i) that the place of the nongestational mother is a 'noplace' and source of hermeneutic injustice, (ii) that the familiar bonds are conceived as a connection among genetics, biology, breastfeeding and upbringing and (iii) that there are multiple forms of discrimination and institutional violence (legal and medical) against nonnormative maternities. We also argue that lesbian maternities open new possibilities with respect to the concept of maternity, to the creation of new upbringing roles that are not previously and normatively established and to questioning sexual division of labor and gender roles in raising children.
