Abstract

Since the Sudanese protests erupted in December 2018 against the National Salvation System led by former President Omar Hassan Al- Bashir, which led to its overthrow in April 2019, Sudan has been experiencing tensions in its various parts. In Darfur, the state of security chaos and tribal fighting has resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and thousands of wounded. In northern Sudan, citizens closed the main road linking Sudan with Egypt in protest against the high electricity prices. In eastern Sudan, where the only port connecting Sudan with the outside is located, citizens closed the port and prevented the entry or exit of goods and merchandise. The main road linking the capital, Khartoum, to the port was also closed. The tension in eastern Sudan is the most serious because of the threat it poses to the Sudanese national security, as some components of the East raised slogans for the first time calling for the right to selfdetermination. This study investigates the reasons that brought eastern Sudan to this stage that threaten Sudan's unity and the cohesion of its population. It also investigates the repercussions of the normalization of relations with Israel on Sudan. The study provided a detail understand and analysed the nature of these reasons under the assumption that stability in the eastern region of Sudan represents the essential foundation for peace and stability in Sudan. Finally, the study examines possible scenarios to address the problem and presents ideas that may contribute. The study analysed a set of signed sources and agreements to explore the reasons for success and failure, including the East Sudan Peace Agreement 2006. The study also analyses the peace agreement signed in Juba 2020, which was a critical factor in escalating the conflict in the region. The study suggests that the scenario of solving the problem and addressing it lies in freezing the course of the Juba Agreement, conducting a national dialogue that includes all the activities of eastern Sudan, and a commitment to the outcomes of this dialogue. The study also states that the normalization of relations with Israel will harm security and stability in eastern Sudan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
