Abstract

In South Korea, the growing number of migrants does not necessarily lead to religious plurality. The presence of these foreigners, on the other hand, encourages Protestant churches to adjust their religious practice by welcoming migrants in communities of different nationalities created within these churches. A religious communalization seems to take place between the Korean faithful and these foreigners, as they share the same faith on an equal basis. Yet the confrontation of differences also arouses the affirmation of an "ethnic identity" on the part of Koreans as well as migrants by provoking "mutual ethnicization." This article analyzes these different processes through the case study of the Onnuri Presbyterian Church in order to better understand how domestic and foreign members of this Church appropriate them.
