Abstract

As we will see, skill and luck are not incompatible in the way that undermine an epistemic probability account of luck, but the compossibility of the two still threatens the view. Hitting a game-winning hit to win a championship, by the best hitter of all time in baseball, is an example of skillful performance with a relatively low probability of success. As I see it, the diachronicity problem exploits different reference classes, comparing various streak possibilities with the intrinsic probability of a particular shot. Gregory Stoutenburg (forthcoming) responds to each of these arguments, and here I take up what I consider to be the deepest challenge for the probability account, the challenge concerning the relationship between skill and luck.
