Abstract

These include the Archaic-period Conly site (16BI19), the Mississippian-period Mounds Plantation site (16CD12), the Precolonial-period Belcher site (16CD13), and the Colonial-period Los Adaes Spanish mission site (16NA16). This means that the discussion in the earlier chapter on Paleoindian- and Archaic-period archaeology is artificially separated from contemporaneous mound building activities in which the Caddo ancestors may have participated. The author does recognize the existence of nearby Watson Brake and Poverty Point during the Archaic-period in northeast Louisiana, but discusses these as a lead-in to the chapter on Woodland-period sites.
