Curcumin Modulate TGFßii-R to Improve Healing of Oral Ulceration.

Abstract

A traumatic ulcer is open sore that occur anywhere inside the oral cavity due to trauma. Curcumin was active component of curcuminoid from turmeric extract, its multifaceted biological effects such as, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic and antiinfectious effects. Wound healing properties of curcumin has received tremendous attention. It accelerates wound healing by exerting its action on various stages of wound repair. The aim of the present study is to assess the impact of topical application of curcumin on induced traumatic oral ulcer healing by evaluation immunohistochemical expression of transforming growth factor beta II receptors. Thirty-six male white New Zealand rabbits age between (2-8) months with body weight between (1000-1400 gm), were exposed to traumatic ulcer on the buccal mucosa by 'punch biopsy' with (8 mm) diameter and (2mm) depth. The animals classified into two groups; control group: the ulcer treated with sterilized distal water, and experimental group: the ulcer treated with 1% curcumin oral gel. The rabbits were sacrificed at 3,7,14 days. Immunohistochemical techniques were used to identify the expression of transforming growth factor beta II receptors (TGFßII-Rs) in both control and study groups. The current study revealed treatment with curcumin raised transforming growth factor beta II receptors expression from the 3rd day until 14th day in ulcer area, with maximum expression in keratinocyte, inflammatory cells, endothelial cell, fibroblast cell, and highly significant differences between control and study group. Curcumin facilitated oral mucosa ulcer healing by increase the expression of transforming growth factor beta II receptors from early healing period than in control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
