Abstract
- The search for the male hormone begins with the experiments of the German physiologist Bertholdt in 1849 who transplanted a rooster's testes into castrated chicks and described the behavior of these chickens before and after the procedure. After the discoveries of the effects of organ extracts, organotherapy, curing diseases with organ extracts, took off. Injections of animal testes extracts, sterilizations to stimulate the production of male hormones and testes transplants became popular because they could possibly counteract aging and sexual dysfunction. The interest in the effects of these treatments led many research groups, supported by the pharmaceutical industry, to isolate androgens from the testes and urine. Ernst Laqueur (1866–1947) and his collaborators were the first to isolate testosterone in 1935. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
