Abstract

The assimilation theories that have been the dominant approach in U.S. sociology for studying the experience of migrants and their children in the United States are based on a paradigm centering on ethnic relations and assimilation as a process of incorporating into the "majority society." In this article, the author discusses the central arguments of the contemporary versions of these theories in light of the main critiques of them, particularly those formulated from a paradigm centering on "race" relations, reproaching them for not taking seriously into account the determinant role of racialization and structural racism in the lives of migrants and their descendants.
