Abstract

The iconographic cycle of the wound and the conversion of Saint Ignatius of Loyola had a specific origin, focused in the Vita written by Pedro de Ribadeneyra in 1572 and later disseminated by various engraved series, among which the one by Pieter Paul Rubens from 1609 and that of the Galle brothers of 1610. And it is that the devotion to the founder had an outstanding importance in the Society of Jesus, whose authorities commissioned the first artistic ensembles on the life of Ignatius even before his beatification and contravening the express prohibition of Clement VIII. However, the canonization of Ignatius in 1622 marked the starting point for the great diffusion of his iconography through the pictorial cycles carried out by some of the most prominent artists of the 17th and 18th centuries.
