Abstract

Tisdall argues that it was the non-utopian version of progressivism that found its way into both primary and secondary sectors of state education by the 1970s and was the cause of public debate over falling standards. This statement raises the potential for further work on the ever-changing status of the teaching profession and the place of teacher education within schools or universities.
