Abstract

This article analyzes the discussions and regulations surrounding military suffrage in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela and their relationship with the armed forces’ periods of dictatorship and political intervention in these countries. Based on the categories of active suffrage and passive suffrage, understood as the act of electing and being elected, respectively, the political and constitutional situation of military voting in each State is determined through a documentary review. Despite the marked differences between these countries in this respect, there is a trend of democratic consolidation through the restriction of military suffrage, especially passive suffrage, after the experiences of military governments. However, the risk of military, political intervention in the democracies of the region persists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
