Abstract

The availability of computed tomography (CT) allowed Hedenstierna to clarify the relationship between lung morphology and physiology (Brismar et al., 1985). He was the first to use this "new" method, which enabled research into the correlation between lung atelectasis and blood oxygenation (Hedenstierna et al., 1986).
