Abstract

Energy has been the most important input for countries to ensure economic growth since the industrial revolution. However, the fact that the energy is exhaustible and produced from sources that harm the environment has brought renewable energy sources and consumption to the fore. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of environmental innovation, economic growth and foreign direct investments on renewable energy consumption. Gengenbach Urbain and Westerlund (2008) panel cointegration analysis and Emirmahmutoğlu and Köse (2011) panel causality analysis were used in the study, in which data from 10 emerging market economies for the period 2000-2018 were used. According to the results of the cointegration analysis, environmental innovation and economic growth affect renewable energy consumption negatively, while foreign direct investments affect renewable energy positively. According to the results of causality analysis, it has been determined that renewable energy consumption is the cause of economic growth, foreign direct investments are the cause of renewable energy consumption, and environmental innovation is the cause of renewable energy consumption.
